Loreen Lamoureaux, a UNM biomedical engineering graduate student, is working on ways to quickly detect Escherichia coli or E. coli bacteria in meat before it reaches the consumer. She is one of dozens of collaborators working on a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to find ways to detect the bacteria as early as possible in the food chain.

THE ARCHDIOCES OF SANTA FE IS ASSUMING LEADERSHIP OF UNM'S AQUINAS NEWMAN CENTER WHICH SERVES THE UNIVERSITY'S CATHOLIC STUDENTS. THE CENTER HAS BEEN STAFFED BY DOMINICAN FRIARS NCE 1950, BUT THEY'RE NOW BEING FORCED OUT. IN A STATEMENT, ARCHBISHOP MICHAEL SHEEHAN SAID THE DECISION TO ASSUME LEADERSHIP WAS A TOUGH ONE. HE HOPES IT WILL IMPROVE RELATIONS WITH UNM'S CATHOLICS, AND LEAD TO MORE PRIESTS COMING FROM THE UNIVERSITY. FATHER MICHAEL DE PALMA OF SAN YSIDRO PARISH IN CORRALES WILL BE APPOINTED THE CENTER'S NEW PASTOR.

PARISHIONERS ARE MAKING THEIR VOICES HEARD ABOUT CHANGES AT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AT UNM. ARCHBISHOP MICHAEL SHEEHAN IS TELLING THE DOMINICAN PRIESTS WHO LEAD THE NEWMAN CENTER ON CAMPUS THAT THEY MUST LEAVE. OUR PARTNERS AT THE JOURNAL REPORT CHURCH MEMBERS DON'T WANT THE PRIESTS TO LEAVE AND HAVE GATHERED 700 SIGNATURES ON A PETITION OPPOSING SHEEHAN'S PLAN. SHEEHAN HAS DECIDED THE DOMINICAN PRIESTS FROM CHICAGO HAVE TO VACATE THE CHURCH BY JULY 1ST. THE ARCHBISHOP SAYS HE WANTS UNM TO PRODUCE MORE MEN, WHO ASPIRE TO BECOME PRIESTS.
