Members of the 44th Army Band performed at the University of New Mexico recently to publicize their upcoming concert on Saturday, July 4 at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 1100 Louisiana Blvd. SE. The event is free and open to the public.
Woodwind performers – known as Zia Winds – shared their talents on Cornell Mall between the Student Union Building and Mesa Vista Hall on the UNM campus. Among the songs they shared was crowd favorite, “Smoke on the Water.”
UNM graduates Sgt. Neil Reed, played bassoon; and Sgt. Michelle Ash, was on clarinet. The other musicians were Specialist Brittany Parsley, on oboe, and Sgt. Margaret Carlson, on both bassoon and flute.
The four are part of the larger 55-member band that plays everything from mariachi to jazz to rock and roll.
The 44th’s 4th of July concert will feature musical selections from the full concert band, Mariachi Nuevo Mexico, the M-9 Sax Pistols, the Zia Winds, bagpiper Ssg. Evan Larsen and the Breaking Brass Brass Band.
A fireworks show follows the concert.
