Come celebrate Earth Day at the University of New Mexico’s 8th Annual Sustainability Expo. The event is Thursday, April 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Cornell Mall -- just east of the Student Union Building.

The Expo offers an opportunity to interact with sustainability-minded organizations at a variety of engaging displays and activities, including a growers’ market and a book swap. Learn about sustainable initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community, connect with local experts, and enjoy the fun, energetic atmosphere at this student-organized event. This year, the Expo has partnered with Knowaste to ensure a zero waste event.

Both campus and community organizations will be at the event. The UNM Wilderness Alliance and the UNM Sustainability Club will both be on hand to answer questions about their campus initiatives. The Sustainability Studies Program will have a vermicomposting station with red wiggler worms and a backyard chicken demonstration.

Transition ABQ and 350 New Mexico, community organizations that promote low carbon living, want to talk with students about how to incorporate sustainability into their lives. Numerous solar companies will showcase their products. The Seed Broadcast van will also be onsite to provide an interactive space to learn about the stories of seeds.

Grab lunch at the growers’ market, and stick around for live music and bellydancing during the noon hour. The Irrational Pie and Street Food Institute food trucks will be serving up pizza and tacos. Local farmers will offer a selection of fresh spring produce and eggs. Santa Fe Honey will be selling their delectable honey-based tepache drinks. Home gardeners can take home seedlings from Growing Awareness Urban Farm. There will also be free yoga classes on the grass throughout the day, so don’t forget your yoga mat!

Numerous campus partners are responsible for coordinating the Expo, including the UNM Office of Sustainability, the UNM Sustainability Studies Program, and UNM Parking and Transportation Services. A Green Fund grant covers the cost of Knowaste’s zero waste services.
