Advance at The University of New Mexico hosts a variety of spring faculty development workshops. The lineup this semester includes workshops in collaboration with the Faculty Research Development Office on the proposal review process.

This series includes the workshops including Interpreting Reviewer Comments, Giving and Receiving Feedback and How to be a Good Reviewer. Success on the Promotion and Tenure Trail, including the workshops Promotion Planning for Associate Professors and Dossier Preparation for Milestone Reviews will also continue.

UNM Faculty Lightning Lounge, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 4-5 p.m. - Join colleagues via Zoom for 7-minute talks about their research and scholarship. Speakers include Integrating Navajo (Diné) culture and ways of life into nursing case studies with  Associate Professor of Nursing at UNM – Gallup Sarah Llanque-White; Professor of Sociology at UNM-Valencia Julia Wai-Yin So; Making media in the age of AI: distractions and opportunities with faculty member in Film and Digital Media Arts at UNM-Taos Peter Walker; and For the Bird: Reading avian-centered texts as evidence of multispecies community with Associate Professor of English at UNM-Gallup Keri Stevenson.

 Those Words Don't Mean What You Think They Mean: Interpreting Proposal Reviews, Friday, Feb. 16, 12:30 p.m., Ortega Hall Room 335. Assistant Vice President of Research Melissa Emery Thompson and Vice President of Research Ellen Fisher will provide some tips for navigating responses to peer reviews, including how to read between the lines, how to organize feedback, and how to prepare an effective response.

Transforming the Mentor-Mentee Relationship for Graduate Success, Friday, Feb. 23, 9:30 a.m. SUB Lobo A&B conference rooms. Join Dr. Fatima Ruiz Villalobos of the University of Madison, WI to learn how to build a positive mentoring culture; navigate challenges and conflicts; and effectively promote accountability and feedback. Presented by the Howard Hughs Medical Institute and the Gilliam Fellows Program.

Professional Service: What’s Right for You?, Friday, March 1, 12:30 p.m., Ortega Hall 335. This session will focus on associate professors. How do you decide which opportunities – serving on review panels and editorial boards, reviewing proposals and articles, organizing conferences – will best support your goals? How much is enough? Colleagues from across campus will address these issues and offer a range of perspectives. Panelists will include Lloyd Lee (Native American Studies and Center for Regional Studies), Christopher Lyons (Sociology and University College), and Meeko Oishi (Electrical & Computer Engineering).
