The University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management, in partnership with UNM Parish Memorial Library, is giving finance students access to the Bloomberg Terminal, the top information platform used by leading decision makers around the world.
The Bloomberg Terminal is a special, integrated software platform that provides access to real-time market information. The terminal will be used in finance classes to support the UNM Regents' Portfolio, a $2.9 Million student-managed fund.
The UNM Regents' Portfolio is the largest student-managed fund in the State of New Mexico, and Bloomberg Terminals are critical components of large student-managed funds nationwide.
"The student-run portfolio is the cornerstone of the Financial Investment Program and the biggest student-run fund in New Mexico," said Anderson Finance Professor Reilly White. "Over the last 12 years we've distributed over $1 million to the UNM Foundation, and our graduates have leveraged their experience to gain competitive positions in finance careers nationally."
White will incorporate the terminal into all his classes. He worked with Professor Todd Quinn, business & economics librarian, and the Library IT department to bring the terminal to UNM. White and Quinn will help students and faculty learn the Bloomberg Terminal capabilities.
He was instrumental in working with Thornburg Investment Management, a mutual funds firm in Santa Fe, to secure a two-year sponsorship for the terminal.
"Thornburg's sponsorship of the Bloomberg Terminal allows us to do things never before possible with the student run portfolio," said White. "For instance, we have access to bond research and real-time equity analysis across international markets. Students can actually learn the same software that sits on trading desks globally, giving them an immersive finance experience unique in the state of New Mexico."
In addition to classroom work, finance students can access Bloomberg education, an important tool that provides a link between instructor education and real world concepts.
“UNM is the only university in New Mexico to provide access to the Bloomberg Terminal,” said acting Dean Shawn Berman. “We are thankful to Thornburg for allowing Anderson students access to the same financial information used by professionals.”
“We are always looking for opportunities to promote financial education in New Mexico, and would like to see more students equipped to compete nationally for professional jobs in finance,” said Rebecca Carrier, director of corporate communications at Thornburg. “So when the opportunity came up to work with UNM, we were happy to help.”
The Bloomberg Terminal is located at Parish Memorial Library. The library staff will manage an online reservation system for the terminal. Library IT services provided the equipment and IT expertise for the setup and maintenance of the terminal. Currently, the terminal is only available to students and faculty members who can use it in their research efforts.
