The NEW Mexico symposium is an opportunity to reflect on changing environments in Mexico and the United States. Thirty years ago, Joel Garreau identified "Mex America" as one of the nine cultural regions of North America. Since then, the Latino population in the United States has exploded and scholarship is emerging in these areas. The word "Amexico" describes the changes that have taken place in large parts of Mexico since the ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
On Thursday, Geraldine Forbes Isais, dean, UNM School of Architecture and Planning, will introduce the topic of The NEW Mexico: Reflections on the built environments of Amexico and Mexamerica. The evening's 5:30 p.m. lecture will address the topic.
On Friday, the concept Amexico: Focus on contemporary Mexican architecture and urbanism in the Post-NAFTA era, is being addressed with speakers from both sides of the border.
And on Saturday, Mexicamerica: Focus on Latino built environments in the United States during an era of changing demographic realities, is the focus of the panel discussions.
Conference co-hosts are the University of New Mexico and AULA: Architecture and Urbanism in Las Americas.
