The UNM Veteran & Military Resource Center, in partnership with President Garnett S. Stokes, invites the campus community to participate in an upcoming Green Zone Training on March 24. The session will be held both in-person and virtually from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Student Union Building, Trailblazer/Spirit Room.

Green Zone Training prepares university faculty, staff, and students to better understand the experience of veterans, service members, and their families at UNM.

UNM is home to more than 1,000 veteran and military students. Many of these students face distinct challenges as nontraditional learners, whether due to age, family responsibilities, or career transitions. Some may have visible or invisible disabilities, or other transition-related issues that make navigating the classroom more difficult. However, research shows that when veteran and military students receive the right support, they perform just as well, if not better, than their civilian counterparts.

Participants who complete the training will gain a deeper understanding of the strengths, challenges, and unique needs of our military-affiliated student population. They will also be better prepared to direct these students to the appropriate resources when necessary. Those who finish the Green Zone Training will be recognized by a visible "Green Zone" Lobo paw print. Much like the LGBTQ Center’s “Safe Zone” program, the Green Zone paw signifies an ally to the military community and contributes to creating a supportive atmosphere at UNM.

Topics the training will cover include:

  • Demographics of active military, veterans, and their family members on campus
  • VA education benefits
  • Service-connected disabilities and health concerns
  • Services provided by the VMRC

The University of New Mexico continues to be rated as a Gold Level "Military Friendly" university.
