The University of New Mexico recently announced an upcoming improvement to parking on Campus Blvd. that will help promote safe streets and improve mobility across campus. Construction of back-in angled parking, which will increase parking capacity by more than 100 spaces, will kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Key project information

  • Estimated construction dates: Wednesday, Aug. 21 – Oct. 15.
  • Campus Blvd. near Stanford intersection to Girard intersection. (View map with construction zones).
  • Traffic will still be able to pass through the area, but drivers may see a slower pace to provide safety to workers on-site and pedestrians
  • Please be aware of pedestrians in the area and proceed with caution

The introduction of back-in angled parking will bring several key benefits:

Improved Visibility
With back-in angled parking, drivers will face forward when exiting a parking space, providing a clear view of oncoming traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. This eliminates the need to back into traffic with limited visibility, creating a safer environment for everyone on the road.

Enhanced Safety
Passengers will now exit vehicles toward the sidewalk rather than the roadway, further reducing the risk of accidents. Drivers will also have a direct line of sight to cyclists in the roadway, enhancing overall safety in shared road spaces.

Convenient Vehicle Loading
By backing into a parking space, cargo areas will be adjacent to the sidewalk, making it easier to load and unload at the curb rather than in the roadway. This change improves convenience and reduces the likelihood of accidents during vehicle loading.

This project will increase campus parking capacity by over 100 spaces, reflecting UNM's ongoing efforts to meet the needs of the campus growing community while prioritizing safety and accessibility.
