Beginning in January, KNME will host a series of six workshops titled, "Ready to Learn Service Workshops." The workshops are adult-training courses designed to provide parents, caregivers and childcare providers with concepts and activities that foster literacy, early-childcare concepts and media awareness.
"Sid the Science Kid: Exploring Science in Early Childhood"
Jan. 14, 10 a.m. to noon at Presbyterian Hospital, 1100 Central Ave. SE
"Sid the Science Kid" is a new educational animated television series designed to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. Participants will learn how each show in the series features a practical in-school science curriculum, with music and humor to celebrate children's natural curiosity about science in everyday life.
"Raising Readers: PBS Kids and Literacy"
Jan. 28, 10 a.m. to noon at Mountainview Private Elementary, 4100 New Vistas Ct. NW
A new workshop that focuses on literacy research conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Participants will explore these results and learn about successful resources that can help all caregivers and parents build children's literacy skills and motivate them to learn.
"Food For Thought: Eating Well on a Budget with Sesame Street"
Feb. 18, 10 a.m. to noon at Presbyterian Hospital, 1100 Central Ave. SE
This new workshop is designed by Sesame Street to help communicate with families facing limited food choices, and to offer positive steps to help families stay healthy.
"The Electric Company: Sparking Literacy Learning"
Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to noon at Mountainview Private Elementary, 4100 New Vistas Ct. NW
The Electric Company turns on the power of possibility for kids by showing them that learning to read can be fun. Like the original series, the new show illuminates educational goals through pop culture using music, comedy, technology and celebrity figures to create a playful multimedia experience. Learn how to use the series to teach kids ages 6-9 the power of reading.

Become familiar with how various science topics are explored during the program and how children are encouraged to nurture their natural curiosity about how things work.
"Martha Speaks: Martha in the Classroom"

The new PBS Kids series is perfect for teaching children reading skills. Learn about how the show provides lessons and activities to teach vocabulary skill building and more.
The workshops are open to parents, caregivers and educators of children ages birth to five. The sessions explore emotion coaching and other specific parenting practices that contribute to early childhood learning. Participants learn the core concepts of communication and social emotional learning and how these early interactions lay the foundation for learning.
Unless specified, children are not permitted to attend the workshops. Attendees are asked to bring their own food and drink as refreshments will not be provided. All workshops meet the requirements of CYFD.
The workshops, which are funded with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with local support from Bernalillo County and St. Joseph Community Health, are free and open to the public. However, space is limited and participants must call (505) 277-4087 to register.
