Exciting things are happening this summer at La Posada, The University of New Mexico’s on campus dining facility.

A major renovation project is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 15 after the conclusion of the spring semester. La Posada will be closed for the summer beginning Saturday, May 13. Staging has already begun in preparation for the renovation.

Minimal disruption and noise is anticipated during construction for students attending classes, studying and living in the area during this summer. The renovation is expected to last all summer with plans for the newly-renovated dining facility to re-open before the students return in August.

“Several features, including a new entrance, a chef innovation station, flooring, lighting, HVAC system and mechanical upgrades, are all part of the renovation,” said Tim Backes, associate director, UNM Dining & Food Services.

The entrance will be entirely new and provide students a safer and more accessible entry opening up into a newly-renovated plaza. Once inside, there will be a kiosk offering Einstein’s Bagels, Starbucks Coffee Beverages and freshly-made desserts to complement the variety of food station offerings.

The entire atrium will be open to the dining room and will house the new Chef Innovation Station. The chef will prepare all meals, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night items, “to order.” Both of these venues, along with a large renovated salad bar, will be open 24/7. Even the soda machines will be new with the ability to add flavors to whatever soda you chose along with a variety of juices, teas and coffees.

Many student favorites will remain including Grill Nation Station, American Classics and a New Mexican concept featuring local ingredients. Additionally, The Press will not only offer paninis, but now also sub sandwiches. The food options at La Posada will include expanded vegetarian options and a station dedicated to serving guests with food allergies and sensitivity. Papa John’s pizza and Red Mango frozen drinks and yogurt will continue to be offered.

As part of the closure, modified summer meal plans will be available for students attending school. Students can use their meal plans at the Union Club Monday through Friday and at the Corner Store seven days a week. The Corner Store will be offering hot to-go items in addition to grab-and-go sandwiches and salads. A wide variety of items will also be offered during the week at a pop-up dining hall at Student Union Building located behind Wise Pies.

The summer door rate without a meal plan is $9.50 + tax (includes faculty and staff) and $6.25 + tax with a meal plan (Dining Dollars).
