Before the advent of fetal surgery, operations took place after birth. Today, with innovative intrauterine procedures, surgeons are able to operate while the fetus is still in the womb. The ability to treat birth defects, such as spina bifida, in utero can lead to the birth of a healthy baby days or weeks after the surgery.
