Nominations are once again open for the annual Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Award. Every year, Staff Council facilitates the prestigious, presidential award which recognizes outstanding staff members who have made significant contributions to the University.
"This has been such a tough year; yet time and again we see UNM staff stepping up to the challenge—adjusting to new rules, working differently and caring for one another,” said Nancy Shane, UNM Staff Council president. “These days our opportunities for showing appreciation are too few. I hope we receive many nominations for the Outstanding Staff Award. So many people deserve recognition. I extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us in December for this special celebration of staff excellence."
Faculty, staff and students are all eligible to nominate, and at least three staff members are chosen as recipients who receive a plaque and monetary award. The Staff Council Rewards and Recognition Committee conducts the screening process and makes recommendations, with the approval of the Staff Council Executive Committee, to the President of the University.
Awardees will be recognized at a ceremony in December, details of which are forthcoming.

In 1990, President Gerald W. May provided funds specifically for staff recognition, and at the end of his tenure, a matching amount was made available from the Regent’s Endowment Fund. These funds are used by Staff Council to recognize outstanding staff members who have made significant contributions to the University. This prestigious presidential award recognizes individuals, but departments may nominate a staff member with one nomination form signed by the group.
