The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) announces a new tradition to celebrate newly promoted faculty each year. The new program gives faculty members the opportunity to select a book of personal significance to be included in the University Libraries collection.
An electronic bookplate, including name, rank, and year of promotion will be added to the University Libraries’ catalog. Book selections can range from fiction to non-fiction or academic to children’s book. These selections stand as a reminder now and into the future of the remarkable accomplishments of the faculty at The University of New Mexico.
“Earning promotion and/or tenure is a testament to our faculty’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service. The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences initiated this book program to recognize their hard work and dedication, and to thank them for all that they do and for being valuable members of the University of New Mexico,” said Leo Lo, dean of College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences.
This was announced by President Stokes at the Promotion and Tenure celebration in September 2022. Since then newly promoted and tenured faculty were able to make selections to celebrate their accomplishment. Examples of selections can be found below:
- Child Survivors of Genocide: Trauma, Resilience, and Identity in Guatemala by Dr. Shirley Heying
- Creativity, Inc: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration by Ed Catmull.
- Ms. Marvel Omnibus by Wilson, Alphona, Miyazawa, Wyatt, & Bondoc
- The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times by Pema Chodron
Additional selections and the personal statements from honorees indicating the significance of their titles can be found at the CULLS website.
The achievement of tenure and promotion represents the culmination of years of work and excellence. It recognizes recipients’ accomplishments in teaching, scholarly work, and service and their contributions to the reputation of the University of New Mexico.
The initiative is a collaborative project between the President’s office, Provost Office, CULLS, Zollinger Library, Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center, and the Health Sciences Center. The initiative is a result of the UNM 2040 goal to celebrate achievements that exemplify UNM’s vision as one university.
