The bookstore at the University of New Mexico hosts A. Gabriel Meléndez on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. for a discussion and signing of his new children's book, “The Legend of Ponciano Guitérrez and the Mountain Thieves.”

The book tells the tale of a farmer named Ponciano Guitérrez living in the Mora Valley of northern New Mexico and the trip he takes through the mountains. During his expedition, he is captured by Vicente Silva and his gang of bank robbers. The story of Ponciano’s escape has been a bedtime story for generations in the Paiz family.

Meléndez is a professor and chair of the department of American Studies at UNM. His research interests include ethnic and cultural representations in film, autobiography, ethnopoetics and ethnocritical theory.

The UNM bookstore is located at 2301 Central Ave. at the intersection of Cornell and Central.
