July is Staff Appreciation Month at UNM. The 2011 line-up introduces new events and brings back old favorites. All events except the Staff Picnic are free and all have opportunities to win door prizes.
For the first time this year, a staff member will sing the national anthem opening the Isotopes baseball game during the Staff Picnic on Saturday, July 23. Staff can cheer on competitors at auditions on Monday, June 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Rodey Theater in the UNM Center for the Arts.
Events begin with the Greg Johnston Summer Concert & Barbecue on Thursday, July 7, noon-1 p.m. on the Cornell Plaza near the south entrance to the Student Union Building. Rudy Boy Experiment performs. Lunch will be available for $5, including a freshly grilled burger, hot dog or vegetarian option, chips, ice cream sandwich and lemonade.
In another first, Staff Council presents the Arts & Crafts Show on Wednesday, July 13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education lobby and Wednesday, July 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the SUB Lobo room. A wide range of handmade arts and crafts by UNM staff will be available for purchase.
The Book/Media Exchange is on Thursday, July 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at three locations: SUB ballroom C, Health Sciences & Services Building room 168 and Student Support & Services Center room 1008. Staff may take as many items as they wish. When donating books or other media, staff receive a bookmark that allows early bird entrance at 9 a.m. Donation sites are listed on the Staff Council Web site.
Staff Council hosts a Meet Your Councilor reception on Friday, July 15, 4-7 p.m. at the Faculty Staff Club, 1923 Las Lomas NE, with music by DeVillins. The barbecue dinner for $6 includes a hamburger, vegetarian burger or chicken breast, potato salad, barbecue beans, watermelon and cupcakes. A cash bar will be available with beer, wine and soft drinks. Meet Staff Council representatives and committees chairs to learn about the work they do on behalf of staff and about opportunities to join a Staff Council committee. The Jim Davis Staff Council Award for Meritorious Service will be presented during Staff Council's regular meeting on Tuesday, July 19, 1-3 p.m. in the SUB Lobo room. The award recognizes significant contributions of an individual to the UNM Staff Council.
During the Pancake Breakfast on Thursday, July 21, 7:30-9:30 a.m. in the SUB ballrooms, Staff Council officers and UNM administrators serve a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, fruit and beverages.
Tickets for the Staff Picnic on Saturday, July 23, 7:05 p.m. at Isotopes Park are $5, on sale through Friday, July 15. Tickets include admission to the game, a ballpark meal, a coupon for a 20 percent discount at the Isotopes Souvenir/Pro Shop on game day and a fireworks display after the game. Free parking is available at the Rio and Pit parking lots. Purchase tickets at UNM ticket offices at the main campus bookstore or the Pit, Physical Plant Department, Basic Medical Sciences Building first floor, or cashier's offices at UNM-Taos, UNM-Gallup or UNM-Valencia.
The Ice Cream Social is on Thursday, July 28, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at three locations: University House, Health Sciences Center Plaza and Student Support & Services Center foyer.
The Staff Council rewards and recognition committee organizes Staff Appreciation events, with sponsorship by university partners including Athletics, Division of Student Affairs, Faculty Staff Club, Health Sciences Center Office of the Vice President, Human Resources, Popejoy Hall, Recycling Department and Student Union.
