Individuals who donate to the UNM Los Alamos (UNM-LA) endowment fund now have the unique opportunity to have their gift matched dollar-for-dollar – it’s part of the U.S. Department of Education Title V grant received by UNM-LA.
This specific Title V grant program provides funding to assist Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in expanding educational opportunities and improving the academic attainment of Hispanic and other students. Per the guidelines, the program enables HSIs to “expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, faculty quality and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students and help large numbers of Hispanic students and other low-income individuals complete postsecondary degrees.”
One of the goals identified in the UNM-LA grant is to improve institutional stability, specifically fiscal stability, by increasing the endowment fund. Over the five-year period of the grant, the goal is to increase endowment funds from $500,000 to $1,000,000 by raising approximately $50,000 each year with donations. Through the U.S. Department of Education, the Title V grant will match endowment donations dollar for dollar up to $250,000 over the term of the grant.
“It is important that we solicit funding for immediate needs and operations, but it is also important that we increase our endowment for long term fiscal stability,” Chancellor Cindy Rooney said. “This opportunity to have matching funds can double the impact of donations, and if we are successful, this will double the size of our endowment over the five-year period.”
The Los Alamos Community Foundation has a designated endowment account for UNM-LA. Donations may be made at losalamoscf.org/donate, by selecting “Community Endowment for UNM-Los Alamos.” If individuals would prefer to mail a donation, please send it with a note indicating it is an endowment donation, to the following address:

Per the American Council on Education’s report on Understanding College and University Endowments, “an endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by a college or university to support its educational and research mission in perpetuity. It represents a compact between a donor and an institution and links past, current, and future generations. These gifts also allow an institution to make commitments far into the future knowing that resources to meet those commitments will continue to be available. Endowments serve institutions and the public by, providing stability, leveraging other sources of revenue, encouraging innovation and flexibility, and allowing a longer time horizon.”
