The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos’ (UNM-LA) Adult Basic Education office is offering free New Mexico High School Equivalency (HSE) prep classes and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes beginning Wednesday, May 11 and running through June 23.

UNM-LA Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program Coordinator Jane Clements, says, “We’re very pleased with the response we’ve received for these classes in the past few months, so we decided to offer a summer session for both classes.  We are hoping that students will be able to take advantage of this extra opportunity to either earn their High School Equivalency Credential, or improve their English skills.”

The HSE prep classes are for students 16 and older. Students between the ages of 16–17 must have a completed Underage Permission Form to be admitted. Students can take advantage of pre-testing, small group and individual instruction, tutor assistance—subject to volunteer tutor availability, computer practice, and independent study.

The New Mexico HSE opens doors by helping those who have earned their credential to qualify for higher paying jobs and to enter a degree or certificate program.

After earning the HSE, students are eligible for UNM’s Bridge to Success Scholarship and New Mexico Lottery Scholarships. Home-schooled students are welcome to attend.

English as a Second Language classes are for students 16 years and older, and are designed to benefit anyone wishing to improve their English language skills.

All classes are free. Summer class times will be:

HSE  Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. in room B11 at UNM-LA
ESL Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 9 – 10:30 a.m. in room B11 at UNM-LA
