UNM-LA Community Education has released its summer schedule of classes for adults and children. The print schedules, which were mailed to area households, are available on campus, in stands around Los Alamos and White Rock and online.
Adults will find a a variety of fitness classes to energize their summer, from yoga to solo salsa. There are jewelry making and painting classes, interior decorating, personal finance and writing classes, and a variety of “Experience New Mexico” classes which will travel off campus.
“Our wellness classes and excursions such as the Mushroom Hike are always popular, but I’m also excited about the classes that have been added to the lineup,” said Lisa Caldwell, program coordinator for Community Education. “The dance fitness and interior decorating classes that started last semester were big hits and new topics this summer include knitting and palette knife painting.”
The popular Summer Program for Youth (SPY) returns in July with week-long classes for children in grades 1-10. Children’s College, for children entering the first through third grades, and Youth College, for children entering the fourth through sixth grades, runs July 18-22.
This year, by parent request, there will be both a morning class and an afternoon class for students in grades 1-3. Students are welcome to bring a lunch and participate in both classes. The morning sessions include hands-on workshops in chemistry, math, local history and more. The afternoon session includes arts and crafts activities, fitness, and reading.
Grades 4-6 meet in the afternoon, with four class choices: Awesome Astrophysics, Chemistry in the Kitchen, Robotics, and University Explorations.
Teen College, for students entering the seventh through tenth grades, runs from July 25-29. With six different exciting classes, teens may have a hard time choosing. The Cybersecurity and Forensics classes tap into themes that are culturally visible and popular today. The Digital Movie Making, Engineering, and Game Design classes help teens develop skills in areas that tend to fascinate them. Teen Theater provides an opportunity for students who are involved in theater year round as well as those who may not have time during the regular school year.
