The University of New Mexico celebrates the opening of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Resource Center on Friday, Aug. 27, 12:30-2 p.m. in Building 20A on Roma Avenue near Dane Smith Hall. The LGBTQ Resource Center is UNM's first center designed to cater to the needs of LGBTQ and all students, faculty and staff.
The center serves people of all gender identities and sexual orientations through support, advocacy, education and safety. As part of UNM's Office for Equity & Inclusion, the LGBTQ Resource Center joins long-standing programs at UNM supporting women and members of racial and ethnic minorities.
Students led the charge to make the LGBTQ Resource Center a reality. Funding was recommended by UNM's student fee review board and approved by the board of regents in April. The opening celebration recognizes all of the students, student organizations, community members, faculty, staff, administrators and departments that helped bring the center into being. The event features speakers and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The LGBTQ Resource Center is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Call (505) 277-0834.
