This week's guest on Report from Santa Fe is John Fleck, Professor of Practice in Water Policy and Governance at the UNM Department of Economics, writer in residence at the Utton Center at the UNM School of Law, and author of "Water is for Fighting Over and Other Myths About Water in the West.”

For 25 years Fleck covered science and the environment for the Albuquerque Journal. As a science journalist, he has been covering water issues since the 1980s when he wrote about the metropolitan water district in Southern California, a very complex and challenging water situation. For years, he has focused on the problems of the Colorado River, an imperiled water source on which 40 million people in the United States and Mexico depend.

Water is for Fighting Over

Fleck is the author of the books Water is for Fighting Over and Other Myths About Water in the West, an exploration of solutions to the Colorado River Basin’s water problems, and co-author of Science Be Dammed: How Ignoring Inconvenient Science Drained the Colorado River. He also wrote The Tree Rings’ Tale, a children’s book about the climate of the West.

His popular blog can be found at inkstain.net where he discusses such topics as collaboration versus competition in water rights and usage and the challenge of balancing the diminishing supply of water with the increasing demands for that water.
