The UNM Society of Physics Chapter was recognized nationally recently as an Outstanding Chapter for 2017-18 by the American Institute of Physics.
The SPS Outstanding Chapter Awards are determined each academic year after a careful review of information, photos and supporting material that is presented in the annual SPS Chapter Reports. The UNM chapter focuses on making a difference in the community and strengthening students involvement in physics throughout the region. UNM’s Society of Physics Students Chapter credits its recognition to chapter historian, Ivey Davis, who created the 2017-2018 UNM Chapter Report.
Faculty advisor, David Dunlap, expressed proudness saying, “The energy and enthusiasm of these students is amazing, and we are all proud of their accomplishments over the past year. The Outstanding Chapter award is an honor, indicating that we are in the top 10 percent of all SPS clubs in the nation.”
The Society of Physics Students is a professional association designed explicitly for students and their advisors. The SPS helps students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community where they learn skills like effective communication and personal interactions, leadership experience, establishing a personal network of contacts, presenting scholarly work in professional meetings and journals and outreach services to campuses and communities. Membership is open to anyone interested in physics.
UNM’s Chapter of SPS meets every Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. in Room 190 in the Physics and Astronomy Building.
