Every year, millions of employees across the United States “choose to get involved” either directly through a workplace giving campaign or individually. There are a multitude of reasons why people donate ranging from a mission-driven workplace effort to a desire to make a difference to personal satisfaction. In fact, for the first time in U.S. history, Americans donated more than $400 billion to charitable organizations in 2017 for these reasons, and many others.
For more than 25 years The University of New Mexico has promoted charitable giving through its annual UNM Gives Campaign, an effort to support the United Way, the UNM Foundation and to encourage volunteerism that kicks off this year on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Last year, the UNM Gives campaign raised nearly $1 million through the enormous support of faculty and staff.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." – Winston Churchill
This year, in a special UNM Gives Campaign kickoff event sponsored by the Office of the President, a Salsa Showdown will be held to generate enthusiasm as UNM looks to exceed its goal of $1 million in campaign donations. Join President Garnett Stokes from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the SUB Atrium on Monday, Oct. 7 for what promises to be a “tasty” event.
“Every year, our students, faculty and staff show the strength of our community spirit through contributing to the UNM Gives Campaign, benefiting the United Way of Central New Mexico and UNM Foundation,” said Stokes. “Together, we raised close to one million dollars last year through this initiative and are aiming to exceed that during the 2019 campaign. In order to do so, we’re launching the UNM Gives campaign this year in a fun and uniquely New Mexican way – with a Salsa Showdown!”
As part of the Showdown, United Way officials will be at the event informing potential donors of the many reasons and several options available for giving. So stop by, taste the finest salsa and guacamole from the UNM campus community, cast your vote for the best and donate to the UNM Gives Campaign. This event is free and open to the entire campus community.
UNM is a proud supporter of the United Way of Central New Mexico helping the local nonprofit serve those in need in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia counties. UNM’s partnership with United Way of Central New Mexico is just one way the campus gives back to the community to help those in need.
The UNM Gives campaign is coordinated across all UNM campuses and hospitals by a planning committee that has met for several months to develop and lead ways in which faculty, staff and employees can come together to donate time and money to charitable organizations in an effort to give back to the community that has provided so much for the institution.
“Each year during the UNM Gives campaign, faculty and staff raise money and volunteer to help make a positive impact in New Mexico,” said UNM Gives Campaign co-chair Abra Altman. “If each of us can pledge even a small amount, we can really make a profound difference in our community. This year, we hope to generate excitement about the campaign and showcase employee’s culinary talents during the Salsa Showdown kickoff event.”
The UNM Gives campaign includes a variety of support options including donating directly to the United Way of Central New Mexico to benefit charitable programs and organizations in our community. When you donate to a cause, you know your contribution is making the difference you desire.
As part of the UNM Gives campaign, the campus community can also donate directly to the UNM Foundation, an entity responsible for raising private financial support benefiting UNM and helping donors link their passions with the institution. If you wish to support a UNM program, scholarship or focus area, consider giving through the UNM Foundation.
Additionally, interested participants have the opportunity to log donated time to local nonprofits as part of the campaign. Faculty, staff and students donate thousands of hours yearly, which could also be designated for the UNM Gives Campaign. Volunteering connects our pack with local community service organizations. Donating time and talent is just as important as financial support. To learn more about this option, visit Community Service.
