The Office of the Chief Information Officer at the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) are collaborating for the first time to sponsor a Mobile Apps Contest.
This contest will provide students from both schools a real-life opportunity to develop and apply coding skills to provide useful apps for the community.
UNM and CNM faculty and staff will provide support to these coding efforts through fall meet-ups, assignment of mentors to applicants, and making development environments available in student labs.
Students are invited to use any open data to create their apps, or take advantage of the vast amount of open data sets which UNM and the City of Albuquerque have made available.
Competing teams will also be granted full access to Lynda.com as a premier resource to help their coding efforts.
Contest winners’ hard work and skill will not go unrewarded, with prizes being awarded for the best three apps, as well as a special prize for all-woman teams:
- First Place - $5,000
- Second Place - $2,500
- Third Place - $1,000
- Women in Technology - $2,500
Women are encouraged to participate in this contest, with a special prize being awarded for the best all-woman team, as well as smaller prizes for Honorable Mentions. Judging for the contest will be conducted by local leaders in industry and higher education.
In order to give students experience starting their own company and marketing their app, motivated students will also be provided with support to commercialize and market worthy apps that may result from the contest.
Registration is currently open. The sign up deadline is Oct. 31, 2015. Judging kicks off with Demo Day on April 1, 2016, with the final award ceremony held on April 22, 2016.
