The University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Book Club will discuss Devils Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea on Thursday, Aug. 24.
In May 2001, a group of men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadliest region of the continent, the "Devil's Highway." Three years later, Luis Alberto Urrea wrote about what happened to them. The result was a national bestseller, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a "book of the year" in multiple newspapers, and a work proclaimed as a modern American classic.
Devils Highway is available at the Albuquerque Public Library in print and e-book and from Amazon and other retailers in Kindle, hardcover and paperback or through the UNM Bookstores, which offer a 20 percent discount to staff.
The HSC book club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month in the Dean’s Large Conference Room on the first floor of Fitz Hall from noon – 1 p.m.
