More than two dozen top New Mexico journalists are participating in the Journalism Boot Camp, set for Saturday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, Jan 23 from 2-5 p.m. at UNM's Marron Hall and Communication & Journalism building, across the street from each other off the intersection of Central and Yale NE.

The Journalism Boot Camp is organized by the Daily Lobo's writing coach, Jim Montalbano, to provide student journalists with an opportunity to learn basics and best practices from professionals in the field.

In addition to publications represented last year – New Mexico Business Weekly, Albuquerque Journal, and KUNM, the lineup includes professionals from the Santa Fe New Mexican, KOB-TV and Albuquerque the Magazine, Montalbano said.

Sessions include:
• Page design
• Column writing
• Smart editing
• Feature writing/Interviewing
• Source development
• Political reporting
• Meet the Photo Desk
• Multimedia/Backpack reporting
• Investigations/Documents w/Sarah Welsh of the Foundation for Open Government.

"Our lunchtime feature on Saturday will be a roundtable discussion on the state of journalism in New Mexico, with the return of last year's keynote speaker M.E. Sprengelmeyer of the Guadalupe County Communicator; Gwyneth Doland, of the recently departed New Mexico Independent; and another guest to be named. On Sunday, we'll tackle cutline writing, sports and a second round of page design," Montalbano said.
