A program coming to The University of New Mexico will offer international opportunities with the Peace Corps while students pursue a bachelor’s degree.

It’s called, the Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program. It’s a collaborative effort between the Peace Corps, International Studies Institute (ISI), Global Education Office (GEO) and Career Services.

The program will provide students with opportunities to get involved in serving their local community while creating a framework to build four competencies.

  1. Training and experience in a work sector
  2. Foreign language skills
  3. Intercultural competence
  4. Professional and leadership development

“This initiative is a unique and exciting opportunity for UNM undergraduate students who wish to make a positive impact on the world,” said Todd Karr, Director of Education Abroad. “The need for global citizens and service-minded individuals is expanding exponentially. Student who have an interest in serving in the Peace Corps now have the opportunity to earn academic credit that will make them a more competitive Peace Corps volunteer candidate.”

Students who complete the program will receive a certificate and a competitive edge when applying for service with the Peace Corps, where they can utilize their newly developed skills and serve communities abroad.

While only U.S. citizens are permitted to serve in the Peace Corps, all students can take advantage of the Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program. The certificate can be beneficial when students apply to international organizations, as well as development work and other international professions in their home countries.

"ISI is excited to offer the Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program as part of the institute's international opportunities,” said Steve Bishop, Director of the International Studies Institute. “Our international focus and Conflict, Peace & Diplomacy thematic track fit well with the Peace Corps' desire to support students whose interests are in fostering greater understanding, cooperation, education and peace around the globe.

"The Peace Corps certificate is a valuable program for increasing students' educational options at UNM and their professional avenues after graduation, and ISI looks forward to helping UNM students benefit from it."

The program launch event is Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 2:30 - 4 p.m., in the SUB Acoma ballroom. The launch is part of International Education Week.
