The University of New Mexico has announced that an internal committee with assistance from a search firm will lead the effort to name a new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for UNM. The position will seek a replacement for Paul Krebs, who is retiring June 30, after 11 years as Vice President of Athletics.
In summary, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics position plans, administers, and directs all NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic programs for men and women; ensures that all athletics programs are in compliance with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and Mountain West Conference (MWC) rules, regulations, and policies; and that all programs and initiatives are integrated and effective in supporting the overall mission, goals and objectives of the institution.
“Lobo Athletics are a source of pride for all of New Mexico, so the right leader is very important for us,” Interim President Chaouki Abdallah said. “I’m especially interested in continuing the academic success of our student-athletes.”
UNM plans to retain Parker Executive Search, an Atlanta-based firm with concentrations in sports and higher education practice areas, to facilitate the search. Daniel Parker, vice president and managing director, will serve as the primary point of contact for the search process, which is set to begin in July.
UNM also named the following as members of the search committee, which will be chaired by Regent President Rob Doughty:
- Marron Lee, UNM Board of Regents Vice President
- Craig White, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost
- David Harris, Executive Vice President for Administration
- Alfred Mathewson, Dean, School of Law
- Amy Neel, NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative
- Michael Rocca, Faculty, Athletic Council
- Ronica Martinez, Faculty, Alumni Letterman
- Garrett Adcock, Student Regent, Alumni Letterman
- Elena Garcia, Student, ASUNM Senator
“We look forward to the expertise these individuals will bring to the review process for this very important position,” Doughty said. “We will continue to provide updates to the campus as we progress through the search process.”
As the hiring officer, Abdallah will not serve on the committee, but will receive the committee’s recommendation for the position.
Janice Ruggiero, deputy athletic director for Internal Operations, is serving as Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics while the search takes place.
“Janice’s dedication and service as a Lobo over the past 27 years will ensure continued stability in UNM’s athletic programs during this transition,” Doughty said.
