As part of a plan to meet the needs of an ever-evolving university, UNM Facility Services (FS) will reorganize into five teams effective July 1, 2025: Building & Landscape Services, Technical Services, Facilities Customer Services, Facilities Design & Construction, and Facilities Support Services.
This change represents a strategic reorganization that signifies a new era focused on customer service, transparency, proactive problem-solving, and the use of technology to enhance efficiency. This action plan was developed following a thorough internal assessment and discussions with senior management, customers, and staff. The Facilities Management brand will be dissolved during the reorganization to create a unified structure, as the new teams will focus on specific areas of expertise. This change aims to enhance efficiency and collaboration within the organization, ensuring that each team can operate effectively in their designated roles.
“Our top priority is—and will continue to be—providing excellent service to our students, faculty, and staff,” said Assistant Vice President of Facility Services, Russell Thompson. “This realignment allows us to coordinate our efforts better and ensure we’re using our people, tools, and time in the most effective way possible.”
The University depends on Facility Services for landscaping, custodial services, and other essential offerings. Whether it’s the shade provided by trees throughout campus, signs used for navigation, drinking water, or any of the other fundamental aspects of the campus experience, the positive effects of Facility Services are felt every day. Facility Services strategic priorities will focus efforts around our people, processes, and technologies to continuously improve their services.

Focus on People
People are the heart of Facility Services, including both the customers served and the dedicated staff who keep The University running. As part of a long-term investment in its people, FS is fostering a culture of improvement and learning by establishing a clear career path for upward mobility for employees.
Facility Services is casting a wide net for the leaders of the three new areas, including a future Safety Manager who will establish monthly safety committees, revamp the safety training program, and implement a safety audit program.
Process Improvements to Drive Efficiency
Customer satisfaction ultimately drives Facility Services. FS customers value efficient and timely work delivery. FS aims to proactively fulfill its work orders by completing them in a timely manner with enhanced planning and scheduling. FS also plans to expand its preventive and proactive maintenance programs to minimize emergency work.
To meet the needs of UNM, the overall work management process will be revamped. A new design review process for intake and approval will be introduced to enhance effectiveness and efficiency. Status tracking on work orders will be improved to provide greater transparency for our customers.
Leveraging Technology for Better Results
Facility Services will fully leverage the power of technology to deliver the best, most efficient service possible. Its Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), responsible for processing over 60,000 work orders annually, will be upgraded to enhance reporting capabilities. This will enable better data processing and increase efficiency.
